FAQs

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • If you’re experiencing symptoms that are making it difficult to go about your daily life, trauma therapy can be tremendously helpful. Sometimes people know they have anxiety and/or depression but don’t realize those symptoms are actually trauma-related. Signs of trauma aren’t as simple as, ‘I have nightmares and flashbacks’. While you may have those symptoms, there are a whole host of other symptoms you may be experiencing as well.

  • Before answering this question, we need to establish the difference between talk therapy and trauma therapy. Talk therapy consists of addressing what is going on in your life at the moment and providing you support. Trauma therapy works by teaching you about your diagnosis, your symptoms, and slowly helping you address the trauma that you may have been avoiding or struggling to cope with.

By helping you address the root of your symptoms, you will be back in the driver’s seat, regaining control over your life so you can heal and move forward instead of staying struck.

All of the trauma therapies we use are evidence-based.

  • Evidence-based psychotherapy is a “fancy term” to describe therapies that work. It means they have been researched and evaluated and have high success rates. The evidence-based psychotherapies we use are tailored to you to address your specific presenting difficulties and cultural expectations.

  • All of the counseling services offered are online. You can use your cell phone, tablet, computer, and be in the comfort of your own home.

  • PSYPACT allows us to provide online therapy to the following states: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, & Wyoming.

  • Yes, we can continue to work together if you feel it would be beneficial to your healing process.

  • Although we can provide services to other states, at the moment we are only able to accept insurance in Florida. There are some sliding scale slots for self-pay services. If you have difficulties paying for services and believe you won’t be able to afford it, please contact us.

  • It’s great that you are seeking additional healing for yourself, but you cannot control the actions of your partner. Both people need to be willing for therapy to work. I know that you’re coming from a place of care, and for change to take place, the other person needs to be willing to do the work.

  • When we’re talking about therapy for PTSD, we’re not talking about a “cure” — we are talking about teaching you how to manage your symptoms so your life improves. Sometimes, things start to feel worse before they start to feel better. That’s because you’re more present with your symptoms rather than avoiding them. But have hope! Evidence-based psychotherapies are scientifically proven to be effective in treating trauma and trauma-related diagnoses. We have seen hundreds of clients improve dramatically and regain control of their lives over the course of treatment.

  • In session, we will talk about each type of therapy I offer that’s relevant to your symptoms and difficulties, and then decide together which therapy makes the most sense based on what you hope to get out of therapy and what your learning style is. This is a collaborative and personalized process.

  • Yes! All therapies we provide can be completed virtually. Dr. Arroyo and Ms. Maurice also completed EMDRIA approved training that teaches specific skills to successfully provide EMDR using telehealth.

  • First and foremost, accessibility! You are able to complete your appointment from anywhere in Florida or any of the PSYPACT states. This means no dealing with traffic, commutes or needing to figure out what to wear. You can show up authentically as you are even in your jammies. This also allows you to schedule appointments during your work breaks, lunch breaks, and makes therapy much easier to fit into your busy day.

  • Yes! Virtual therapy has proven to be as effective as in-person therapy. It offers a wonderful solution for individuals who are not able to travel easily, who have concerns for their safety or well-being, or who are struggling with difficulties leaving their house, not limited to issues like agoraphobia or panic.

Virtual therapy is more approachable and often puts clients more at ease since they are allowed to stay in their own space to do their therapy appointment. It is a privilege to get to see a little bit of your environment, and bonus points if I get to meet your pets on camera!

Virtual therapy is also more affordable than in-person therapy if you take into account the fact that you don’t have additional costs such as gas, for example.

  • This answer will vary depending on presenting difficulties, treatment goals, and your progress.

For maximum therapeutic benefits, appointments are scheduled on a weekly or biweekly basis.

  • A HIPAA encrypted platform is used for all appointments to protect your privacy. Once your appointment is scheduled, you will receive a unique link for each appointment. And then we proceed just as we would in an in-person therapy session, building the therapeutic relationship, developing trust, and working toward alleviating your symptoms so you find healing and peace.

Education is a big component of our work, so after an evaluation we will make sure you understand the diagnosis, the reason for your symptoms, and the science behind what you’re experiencing.

  • This will vary depending on your needs and presenting difficulties. Evidence-based psychotherapies can last anywhere from 12-16 weeks. This does not include the time working on developing trust and the therapeutic relationship, addressing other challenges, and ‘booster’ sessions, which are available to you if you need additional support.

  • If you experience anxiety but you are unsure if it’s trauma-related or not, this is something we can evaluate in our first session to give you an accurate diagnosis.

  • While CPTSD, or Complex PTSD, is not a specific diagnosis in the DSM-5-TR, it does present a lot of challenges that We are happy to help you work through.

  • Virtual reality is an effective treatment and a great tool for treating anxiety, because it can be difficult to recreate situations that cause anxiety in real life. With VR, you are guided by a licensed professional in a simulation that is not a real threat to your safety. This makes it easier to start exposure therapy and also makes it more accessible. All you need to do VR therapy is a smartphone or a VR headset and a reliable internet connection. VRET is an excellent asset when working on improving PTSD and other trauma-related disorders that have an anxiety component, such as specific phobias.
