HEALING TRAUMA AND HEALING LIVES

Serving Florida and PSYPACT States

What is EMDR?

EMDR, or eye movement desensitization and reprocessing, is a specialized form of psychotherapy that helps individuals process and alleviate distressing memories from traumatic events by utilizing guided eye movements and other bilateral stimulation techniques.

It’s widely accepted that healing from a trauma can — and will — take a long time. You may have already spent years in psychotherapy, only to be disappointed by the healing outcomes.

EMDR can help you heal from trauma better faster.

The Benefits of EMDR Therapy

You can process tragedy and trauma faster with EMDR. Even better, you can do remote EMDR from the comfort and safety of your own home.

You don’t need to have PTSD to benefit from EMDR. Traumas that require treatment can be “little t traumas” or “big T Traumas.” It is not necessary  to have gone through something horrific to benefit from EMDR. EMDR helps your brain process and move past an experience that has left you feeling distressed so that your brain doesn’t react as though you’re still in (actual or perceived) danger.

Here’s How EMDR Therapy Works

We offer remote EMDR, so if you live in Florida or a PSYPACT state, we can still work together through online therapy!
You don’t need to discuss the traumatic events in detail as the processing will happen in your head, but we do gather information about the distressing events to create a timeline that will help us move along in the process. We respect your privacy and space, understanding that not everyone wants to go into the whole story of their trauma. We work with you to create a safe, therapeutic environment where your healing is our priority. If you don’t feel comfortable sharing information about distressing events, you don’t have to. Since all the processing will happen in your head, we can have a complete understanding without the need for details.

We then use the timeline to identify negative cognitions you have as a result of the trauma. This can include anything like negative things you think and say about yourself, negative thoughts you have about your life or your capabilities, etc. You then identify your anxiety levels and rate your distress levels for each traumatic event.

Once we have established the timeline of events, we focus on building healthy coping skills which you can draw upon if you feel distressed during treatment. This is to ensure you are able to ground yourself, regulate your emotions, and manage any distressing or intrusive thoughts during the course of our work together. Coping skills might include breathing exercises, self-soothing, mindfulness exercises, problem-solving, engaging in pleasant activities, grounding skills, etc. Emotional regulation skills will also be discussed to assist you with regulating yourself even when we aren’t meeting for therapy, so you can think of them as part of your “toolbox,” there to be used in between or during sessions.

Once you have practiced some coping skills, you determine when you are ready to start EMDR. When we are reprocessing, we begin with the least distressing event first. Less distressing events may take as little as one session to be reprocessed. Others may take a few sessions.

Why Reflection Psychology for EMDR therapy?

Many of our clients come to us to heal traumas they’ve never spoken about with anybody. They come to us to heal wounds they can’t bear to speak out loud.

We won’t force you to tell a story you aren’t ready to tell. EMDR can work even if you don’t want to discuss traumatic events. That’s what makes it such a powerful healing modality for trauma survivors.

We work at your pace. You guide the process.

With EMDR, you can reprocess traumatic events without doing talk therapy.

Our online services make remote EMDR a breeze. No traffic, no commuting, remote EMDR can be done from anywhere.

Our clinicians are highly trained and have been doing trauma work for many years. We have seen people go from severely depressed to happy again. We’ve seen the way EMDR has helped restore people’s ability to function. Time and time again, we’ve watched our clients become newly motivated and excited for the future.

Positive Outcomes & Benefits of EMDR:

EMDR opens up the possibilities and allows people to dream about what life can look like when it’s not being overshadowed by the pain of trauma.

When you do remote EMDR, you become more connected to your physical body. You learn to identify bodily sensations and where emotions are stored and allow them to pass.

You will experience positive relational outcomes too, as you become more empowered, assertive, and sure of yourself. When you do remote EMDR, you develop new thoughts and beliefs about yourself and the event that occurred. Old stories are healed and replaced with more adaptive beliefs.

As triggers are healed, you will become less reactive and develop the ability to stay grounded in the present.
