Headshot of Dr. Cabiya with Reflection Psychology

Hi, I’m so happy you’re here. I’m Dr. Cabiya.

I’m a Bilingual Licensed Clinical Psychologist and addiction therapist seeing patients across Florida. I specialize in treating trauma, PTSD, and substance use.  Providing therapy to both english and spanish speaking communities in Florida.

I am a compassionate and committed addiction therapist and trauma psychologist with a longstanding interest in addiction and mental health. I have been an addiction therapist and trauma psychologist for over 40 years. Throughout my career, my primary focus has been understanding and addressing the complexities that arise from substance abuse and addiction.

  • I AM HERE TO HELP YOU HELP YOURSELF.

Early in my career as a trauma psychologist, I worked with patients in New York who experienced heavy substance abuse, opiate use, and addiction. I am passionate about offering helpful, compassionate, and time-limited care for people experiencing addiction.

I then moved to Puerto Rico, where I started my own private practice and worked in a psychiatric hospital. I directed the psychology department at the hospital and treated individuals with a range of severe psychiatric difficulties, such as psychosis, major depression, and heavy drug abuse. I then joined Albizu University in Puerto Rico, where I performed extensive research on evidenced based interventions and supervised doctoral students in their clinical practice. I just retired from the University and was made professor emeritus.

When I moved to Florida, I continued working in private practice, seeing individuals, couples and families who managed challenges related to anxiety, depression, and addiction.

I leverage my extensive background as a trauma psychologist to address the subtleties of behavioral dysfunction related to trauma and addiction. I bring the insights gained from working with severe cases to more effectively recognize signs of early deterioration in my clients. The wealth of knowledge acquired from working with severe psychiatric conditions informs my approach, making it easier for me to identify warning signs and proactively intervene. This preventative mindset allows me to assist my clients in avoiding the development of severe pathologies.

I am here to help you get your life back on track. You can free yourself from the grips of addiction.

Individual Trauma & Addictions Therapy

Many of my clients come to me seeking online therapy because they have endured a psychological trauma at some point in their lives that they have not yet healed. Their trauma is contributing to substance use/abuse or some other form of addiction (e.g. gambling, video games, etc.).

I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) in our work together. These therapies are used to empower you to take control of your own life so your symptoms don’t overwhelm you or dictate your personality. I firmly believe in helping my clients take control of their lives. You belong in the driver’s seat. I am here to help YOU manage your problems in an effective way so you don’t fall into dysfunctional and harmful long-term patterns.

In our work together, we get to the problems as quickly as possible so you can take control of your behavior faster. Time is the enemy of treatment — the more you engage in unhealthy behaviors, the more difficult it becomes to break those patterns and pathologies. The sooner you get help, the better, and I am here to be as directive and empowering as possible so you can get well enough to live the life you want to be living.

Throughout the therapeutic process, I remain very attentive to your needs and changes in behavior. Together, we can make adjustments to your treatment plan as needed.

Couples Trauma & Addictions Therapy

Couples often come to me because they are facing major communication issues and feel misunderstood. If you or your partner are struggling with poor communication, anxiety, depression, or substance abuse, virtual couples therapy can offer tremendous support. Whether you’re working through infidelity, jealousy, or patterns of outbursts/avoidance, I use a family systems approach to understand the system you are both operating within as a couple and determine where the dysfunction is coming from. In virtual couples therapy, I can help you adapt more effective communication strategies and healthy behaviors so you feel safer, calmer, and more connected.
When I do virtual couples therapy, I sometimes notice that the past is interfering with the present. If you or your partner have unresolved individual trauma, I may recommend engagement in individual therapy along with participation in virtual couples therapy.

Family Therapy For Trauma & Addictions

Often families come to me with an “identified patient” — someone they perceive as the primary problem. This might be a teenager who is experimenting with marijuana or a parent who has unaddressed substance abuse issues. But when an individual is struggling, there are likely systemic issues within the family that also need to be addressed. For one person to get the help that they need, sometimes the whole family needs to participate.
